blog post 4- chinese new year

Filipinos celebrate Chinese New Year because of the strong Chinese influence in the country, especially from the Filipino-Chinese (Chinoy) community. Many Filipinos have Chinese ancestry, and Chinese culture has been deeply embedded in Philippine traditions for centuries. The celebration is also tied to business and trade, as many Filipino-Chinese families believe that welcoming the Lunar New Year brings prosperity and good fortune. Even non-Chinese Filipinos follow traditions such as wearing red, using lucky charms, and preparing round fruits to attract wealth and luck. In major cities, especially in Binondo, the world’s oldest Chinatown, the festivities include dragon dances, fireworks, and feasts, attracting both tourists and locals. The Philippine government also recognizes Chinese New Year as a special non-working holiday, further highlighting its cultural significance. Ultimately, the celebration reflects the country’s appreciation of its Chinese heritage and the shared belief in prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead.
